Frequently Asked Questions
Should I repair my AC or just replace the whole system?
It depends on the age and the fault, and we'll show you the readings so you can decide. As a rule of thumb, if the system is under about 10 years old and the repair is a capacitor, contactor, or control board, fixing it is the smart money. Once a unit is 12-15 years old, running R-22 refrigerant, or facing a failed compressor or leaking coil, replacement usually pays for itself in efficiency. We'll never push a replacement to dodge a repair - we offer a free second opinion on any replacement quote you've already been given for exactly that reason.
How do you know what size system my house needs?
We run an actual Manual J load calculation - measuring your square footage, insulation, windows, and ductwork - instead of just matching the tonnage of your old unit. Older homes were often oversized, which short-cycles the system, leaves the air clammy, and wears the equipment out early. Right-sizing is the difference between a system that runs steady and quiet and one that blasts on and off all day.
What SEER2 rating should I be looking for?
For most Kansas City homes, a 15 to 17 SEER2 system hits the sweet spot between up-front cost and summer savings - high enough to noticeably cut your July and August bills without paying for efficiency you'll never recoup. Variable-speed equipment in the 18+ range is worth it if you want the quietest operation and the steadiest temperature, especially in a two-story. We'll walk you through the payback math on each option before you commit to anything.
Do you offer same-day service when the AC or heat goes out?
Yes - we run same-day no-cool and no-heat service seven days a week across the metro. When your AC quits in a heat wave or the furnace dies overnight, you call and we schedule you that day. No phone tree, no waiting until next week. Comfort Club members get priority scheduling and pay no overtime fees.
How much does a new system cost, and how is the price set?
A full replacement varies with the size, efficiency, and whether your ductwork needs sealing, but you'll always get one flat rate approved in writing before any work starts - no hourly meter and no surprise add-ons at the end. For repairs, we put gauges on the system, find the real fault, and quote a flat price you sign off on first. The number we agree to is the number you pay.
Why is one room always hot and the rest of the house fine?
Almost always it's an airflow problem, not a thermostat problem - undersized return ducts, leaky attic runs dumping conditioned air into the rafters, or a system that's the wrong size for the layout. It's especially common in Overland Park and Lee's Summit two-stories. We measure the airflow at the registers, mastic-seal the leaking joints, and balance the system so every floor is comfortable from the same thermostat. Often that fixes it without any new equipment at all.
How often should I have my system tuned up?
Twice a year is ideal - cooling in the spring, heating in the fall - so small faults get caught before they become a July breakdown or a February no-heat call. Our $89 precision tune-up is a real 21-point inspection: we clean the coil, check the refrigerant charge, and test the heat exchanger and burners. It's the cheapest insurance you can buy on a system, and it usually lowers your energy bill enough to pay for itself.
Are your technicians certified, and is the work guaranteed?
Every technician we send is NATE-certified, so whoever reads your gauges actually understands refrigerant cycles and load math - and we're licensed, insured, EPA 608 certified, and Carrier Factory Authorized. Every replacement comes with our Right-Sized Comfort Guarantee: we commission it to spec and verify it's running as efficiently as it was rated to before we leave, and if it isn't, we make it right at no charge.
